With a maximum of 13 children and 2 teachers, the children begin to explore more advanced concepts, such as pre-reading, writing, graphing, numbers, and small and large group work. Children must be potty-trained and developmentally ready for the Pre-K program.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS?

  • Mission Hills Community Preschool is a reggio-inspired school. Reggio preschools stand out as beacons of creativity, curiosity, and collaborative learning. Rooted in the educational philosophy that originated in Reggio Emilia, Italy, these preschools offer a unique and holistic approach to early learning. At the heart of Reggio-inspired preschools lies the belief that every child is a capable, competent learner. This philosophy emphasizes the importance of fostering a child's innate curiosity, creativity, and social skills. Reggio-inspired preschools embrace a project-based approach to learning. Rather than following a strict curriculum, educators work alongside children to identify their interests and curiosities. Together, they embark on in-depth, hands-on projects that encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. These projects often emerge from the children's questions, observations, and experiences, making the learning process deeply personal and engaging.

  • For many parents seeking childcare options in San Diego, the difference in terminologies may be confusing. While daycare is a type of child care program, daycare tends to focus more on practicality than enrichment. Daycares usually have larger class sizes with fewer teachers, whereas preschools are geared more toward providing an enriching early childhood experience. Preschools tend to have better teacher to student ratios and offer a gentler introduction to the school setting.

  • Yes! Mission Hills Community Preschool is a play-based preschool. It is at the foundation of what we do each and every day! Why? Play-based learning is not just about having fun; rather it is a research-backed approach to early childhood education. As children play, they actively construct their foundation for a curious, resilient, and adaptable mind. Research suggests that children who engage in play-based learning experiences in their early years demonstrate better academic outcomes, problem-solving skills, and social competence later in life.

  • You’ve likely seen San Diego Montessori and Waldorf inspired preschools. Our Reggio-inspired preschool is similar and does share common goals (including fostering holistic development and respecting the individuality of each child), but there are also many differences:

    • Reggio-inspired preschools engage in project-based learning. Teachers collaborate with children to explore topics of interest, encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving.

    • Where Montessori students are given the freedom to explore and discover in a prepared environment, we prioritize natural light, open spaces, and the use of materials that stimulate creativity are hallmarks of these environments. The use of natural materials, emphasis on artistic expression, and a focus on rhythm in daily activities are characteristic of Waldorf environments.

    • Montessori teachers, often referred to as “Guides”, aim to observe and guide children but interfere as little as possible. At our school, Mission Hills Community Preschool teachers collaborate with our children to explore topics of interest, encourage critical thinking and embark upon problem-solving journeys with them.
